Dinner Buns

Dinner buns tell a story of warmth, comfort, and irresistible flavor. These perfect, pillowy dinner buns will elevate any meal to a moment of pure indulgence.

A little about the recipe…

There’s something truly magical about the aroma of freshly baked dinner buns wafting through the kitchen. It’s a scent that evokes memories of family gatherings, holiday feasts, and cozy Sunday dinners. Whether paired with a succulent slice of ham, a golden-roasted turkey, or a vibrant salad, dinner buns have a special place on the table, elevating every meal to a culinary experience.

For many of us, the allure of dinner buns extends far beyond their role as a side dish. It’s the anticipation of that first warm, buttery bite that makes them irresistible, drawing us closer to the kitchen as they bake to golden perfection. And let’s not forget the joy of breaking bread with loved ones, sharing laughter and stories over a basket of freshly baked buns.

But what is it about dinner buns that makes them so universally beloved? Perhaps it’s their versatility – whether you prefer them soft and fluffy or slightly crusty on the outside, there’s a dinner bun recipe to suit every taste and occasion. Or maybe it’s the simple pleasure of kneading dough by hand, feeling it transform beneath your fingertips into something delicious and comforting.

This bun recipe in particular is more on the soft and fluffy side. If you would like them a bit crispier on the outside, you can bake them for a little longer or choose not to add the butter on the tops of them when they come out of the oven.

So, grab your apron and preheat your oven – it’s time to fill your home with the irresistible scent of freshly baked dinner buns. Get ready to wow your guests and create memories that will last a lifetime, one golden-brown bun at a time.

Ingredients/Substitutions

For the perfect batch of dinner buns, you’ll need a handful of simple yet essential ingredients:

  • All-purpose flour: The foundation of our buns, providing structure and texture.
  • 2% milk: Adding richness and moisture to the dough. Don’t worry if you prefer whole milk or 1%; they work just as well.
  • Instant yeast (preferably Fleischmann’s): Gives buns their airy rise and soft crumb. While I prefer Fleischmann’s, feel free to use your favorite brand.
  • Sugar: Sweetens the buns ever so slightly. Also plays a crucial role in activating the yeast, ensuring a perfect rise.
  • Egg: Adding richness and helping to bind the dough together for that perfect tender and fluffy texture.
  • Salted butter: I personally like to use salted butter for my bun recipe as it adds a rich flavor. Using salted butter eliminates the need to add extra salt to the dough. However, if you opt for unsalted butter, don’t forget to incorporate 1/2 teaspoon of salt into the mix. For a dairy-free option, margarine can be used as a substitute.

With these simple ingredients in hand, you’re ready to embark on a journey to create the most delectable dinner buns your kitchen has ever seen. Let’s get baking!

Perfect Pairings and Additions

Try pairing the dinner buns with one of these…

Split Pea and Ham Soup

Turkey Dinner

Nashville Chicken Thigh

Creamy Coleslaw

For those looking to add a personal touch or enhance the flavor profile even further, try adding one of these to your dinner bun recipe:

  • Cheese: Stir in 1/2 cup of your favorite shredded cheese (cheddar, parmesan, Gruyère, or a blend) to the softened butter before spreading it on the dough. This will create cheesy pockets of goodness throughout the buns.
  • Garlic: For an extra savory kick, add a tablespoon of minced garlic to the softened butter along with your herbs. Roast the garlic cloves for a deeper, sweeter flavor before mincing.
  • Herbs and/or Spices: Not a huge cheese fan? Instead, experiment with your favorite dried herbs or spices. A teaspoon of dried oregano, thyme, rosemary, or even a pinch of cayenne pepper can add a wonderful depth of flavor.
  • Sweet or Savory: Get creative with different mix-ins. Chopped fresh herbs like parsley, chives, or dill can add a pop of color and freshness. For a sweet twist, try a cinnamon sugar filling or a sprinkle of chocolate chips.

How to Store

Fresh From the Oven: For the ultimate in fluffy goodness, store your freshly baked dinner buns at room temperature in an airtight container or a Ziploc bag. This will keep them soft and delicious for up to three days. They’re perfect for enjoying throughout the week alongside soups, salads, or simply savoring them on their own.

Refrigerate for Later: Need your buns to last a bit longer? No problem! Store them in an airtight container or a freezer bag in the refrigerator for up to a week. While they won’t be quite as soft as fresh-baked buns, they’ll still be delicious! To reheat, simply pop them in the microwave for 15-30 seconds, or until warmed through.

Freeze and Bake Later: Planning ahead is a breeze with this method! Once your buns have cooled completely, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze them for up to a month. When the craving for fresh buns strikes, simply thaw them overnight in the refrigerator or at room temperature. Then, reheat them in a warm oven for a taste of bakery-fresh perfection right at home! No matter how you choose to store them, these dinner buns are sure to become a staple in your kitchen.

Total Time 1 hour 45 minutes
Course Appetizer, Side Dish
Servings 24

Equipment

  • 9×13 Baking Dish
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Measuring Cups
  • 2 Mixing Bowls

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven to 350 degrees
  • Grease a 9×13 baking dish
  • Grease a bowl for the bun dough to rise in.
  • In a large bowl, add warm milk, warm water and sugar. Mix until sugar is dissolved.
  • Add yeast to the milk mixture and let it stand for five minutes or until yeast becomes foamy.
  • Pour in the melted butter and egg to the milk mixture.
  • Add the flour to the milk mixture and stir with a stand mixer using a dough hook or mix with a fork until it gets dry enough to start kneading with your hands.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5-7 minutes, adding a little extra flour as needed to prevent sticking. Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Gently knead for a minute or two. Divide the dough into 24 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball.
  • Arrange the dough balls close together in a greased baking pan (they will expand and become connected during baking). Cover loosely with plastic wrap or a damp kitchen towel and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Put buns in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown on the tops.
  • Brush with additional melted butter for extra shine and buttery flavor, if desired
  • Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

Warm milk and water is key: Make sure your milk and water is warm, but not hot, to activate the yeast. Hot milk will kill the yeast and prevent the dough from rising.
Don’t over-knead: Knead the dough just until it’s smooth and elastic. Over-kneading can make the buns tough.
Let them rise!: Be sure to let the dough rise both times. This allows the yeast to work its magic and create light and fluffy buns.
Get creative! Before the second rise, brush the tops of the buns with melted butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or everything bagel seasoning for an extra flavor boost. You can even add garlic, cheese, or your favorite herbs.
