Leftover Ham (including the bone): Utilizing every part of the ham, including the flavorful bone, adds depth and richness to the soup. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to repurpose leftovers and minimize waste, staying true to a more practical approach to cooking. I personally like to use a smoked spiral ham, but whatever ham you choose, I am sure would work just fine. When you choose a bone in ham, it tends to add more flavor and nutrients to the soup.

Drippings from Cooked Ham: Don’t let those savory drippings go to waste! They’re packed with flavor and lend a delicious smokiness to the soup, enhancing its overall taste and aroma.

I use Blue Menu Split Peas for this recipe as they have always been of good quality and added a rich taste, ensuring a consistently delicious result every time.

Equipment

  • 6 Qt. Cooking pot
  • Measuring cup
  • Kitchen Knife
  • Grater (optional)

Instructions
 

  • Fill a large pot with water. Add the ham bone along with the ham drippings. Ensure that the ham bone is covered by enough water.
  • Boil on medium for about 1 hour.
  • Remove the ham bone from the pot, Discard bone. Note: if pieces of ham have fallen off the bone into the broth, I prefer to take them out and set aside until after the peas are cooked.
  • Add the split peas to the pot of simmering water. Stir occasionally to prevent the peas from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  • Continue simmering the peas until they are smooth and there are no pea lumps, adding more water to the pot as needed to maintain the desired consistency.
  • While the peas are simmering, cut up the leftover ham into small bite sized pieces.
  • Once the peas are smooth, add the diced ham to the pot.
  • Season the soup with salt to taste, adjusting the amount according to your preference.
  • If you are adding any optional ingredients such as grated carrot or celery, add them to the pot at this time as well.
  • Allow the soup to simmer for an additional 35-45 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  •  Serve the soup hot.

Notes

  • For a quicker soup, you can use a potato masher to mash up a portion of the peas directly in the pot towards the end of cooking, when they are more tender but not yet dissolved. 
  • For a quicker and creamier pea soup, try using a immersion blender to blend the peas during the cooking process.
