These no-bake squares boast a rich and decadent flavor profile with three distinct layers: a crumbly graham cracker and nut base, a sweet and creamy custard filling, and a luxurious top layer of dark chocolate.
A little bit about this recipe…
Nanaimo bars are a delightful treat with a rich history and a flavor profile that’s guaranteed to tantalize your taste buds. These no-bake squares hail from Nanaimo, British Columbia, and have become a beloved symbol of the city.
The magic of Nanaimo bars lies in their three distinct layers. The base is a symphony of textures, featuring a crumbly and buttery graham cracker crust studded with chopped nuts. This base provides a sturdy foundation for the next layer, a smooth and creamy custard filling traditionally flavored with vanilla. The final touch comes with a luxurious dark chocolate ganache, adding a touch of richness and decadence to the entire experience. Each bite offers a delightful contrast – the satisfying crunch of the crust, the creamy sweetness of the filling, and the smooth, rich finish of the chocolate.
Nanaimo bars are a cherished treat for many reasons. Their simplicity is a major draw, making them perfect for bakers of all skill levels. No oven required! Additionally, the individual layers can be prepped ahead of time, allowing for easy assembly and minimal fuss. Plus, the ability to customize the recipe with different nut options, flavored custards, and even alternative toppings makes them endlessly versatile. But perhaps the most important reason for their enduring popularity is the pure joy they bring. Sharing a plate of freshly cut Nanaimo bars with friends and family is a tradition that embodies the spirit of togetherness and community. So, why not whip up a batch and experience the magic of Nanaimo bars for yourself?
Ingredients used
Nanaimo bars are a symphony of textures and tastes, and each ingredient plays a specific role in creating this delightful dessert:
- Butter & Vanilla: This duo forms the base of both the crust and the ganache. Butter adds richness and helps bind everything together, while vanilla extract infuses a warm and comforting sweetness.
- Shredded Unsweetened Coconut & Walnuts: These provide textural contrast and a touch of tropical flavor to the graham cracker crust. The coconut adds a delightful chew, while the walnuts offer a welcome crunch.
- White Sugar: This sweetens the graham cracker crust and custard filling. White sugar provides a neutral sweetness that allows the other flavors to shine.
- Custard Powder: This magical ingredient creates the smooth and creamy custard filling. When whisked with milk, it thickens and takes on a classic vanilla custard flavor.
- Milk Chocolate: Melted milk chocolate forms the base of the decadent ganache topping. It adds a luxurious richness and a touch of sweetness that complements the other layers perfectly.
- Egg: A single egg helps bind the graham cracker crust ingredients together, ensuring a sturdy and crumbly base.
- Cocoa Powder: Unsweetened cocoa powder is used in the ganache to deepen the chocolate flavor and create a beautiful dark contrast with the lighter layers.
- Graham Crackers: These form the base of the Nanaimo bar. Crushed graham crackers provide a sturdy foundation and a delightful buttery flavor that pairs beautifully with the other ingredients.
How to store
At Room Temperature:
- Airtight Container: The simplest and most common storage method is to place the Nanaimo bars in an airtight container at room temperature. This will keep them fresh for up to 3 days.
In the Refrigerator:
- Airtight Container: For a slightly longer shelf life, store your Nanaimo bars in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The cooler temperature will help the chocolate ganache stay firm and the custard filling maintain its texture for up to 5 days.
Freezing:
- Individually Wrapped: For long-term storage, Nanaimo bars freeze beautifully! Wrap each bar individually in plastic wrap and then place them in a freezer-safe container or bag. They will keep for up to 3 months frozen.
- Thaw Overnight: When you’re ready to enjoy a frozen Nanaimo bar, simply remove it from the freezer and thaw it overnight in the refrigerator.
Here are some additional tips for storing Nanaimo bars:
- Cut After Chilling: For cleaner cuts and a sharper presentation, refrigerate or freeze the Nanaimo bars for at least 30 minutes before cutting.
- Avoid Heat and Humidity: Keep your Nanaimo bars away from heat sources and areas with high humidity, as this can cause the chocolate ganache to melt and the bars to soften.
- Label and Date: If you’re freezing your Nanaimo bars, be sure to label them with the date they were made. This will help you keep track of their freshness.
Substitutions/Alterations to your Nanaimo Bar
Here are some substitution ideas for those missing an ingredient or seeking a flavor twist:
Crust:
- No Walnuts? No Problem: Don’t have walnuts? Substitute with your favorite chopped nut, like pecans, almonds, or even hazelnuts! You could also omit the nuts altogether and use an extra ½ cup of graham cracker crumbs for the crust.
- Gluten-Free Twist: For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free graham crackers for the crust. Just be sure to choose a brand that’s certified gluten-free to avoid any cross-contamination.
- A Touch of Spice: For a touch of warmth, add a ¼ teaspoon of ground cinnamon or nutmeg to the graham cracker crust mixture.
Custard Filling:
- Vanilla Bean Bliss: Instead of custard powder, use the scraped seeds from a vanilla bean mixed with a tablespoon of cornstarch for a more natural vanilla flavor.
- Peanut Butter Power: Craving something a little different? Try substituting the custard powder mixture with ½ cup of creamy peanut butter and 1 tablespoon of milk. This will create a delicious peanut butter filling.
- Coconut Cream Dream: For a coconut cream filling, whisk together 1 cup of full-fat coconut milk with 2 tablespoons of cornstarch and ¼ cup of powdered sugar until thickened.
Chocolate Topping:
- Dark Chocolate Lover?: Swap the milk chocolate for dark chocolate for a richer and more intense chocolate flavor.
- White Chocolate Wonder: For a lighter and creamier twist, use white chocolate instead of milk chocolate.
- Chocolate Chips in a Pinch: Don’t have chocolate bars on hand? You can use semi-sweet chocolate chips (about 1 cup) and the same amount of heavy cream to create a simple ganache.
